A Love Note to the COVID 19 Bride & Groom

To my dear brides and grooms,

This was certainly unexpected, wasn’t it?  It’s likely you’ve been planning your celebration for 12, 18, even 24 months and in all of your plans and details, I doubt a worldwide pandemic crossed your mind as a possible interruption on your way to the big day. And yet here we are – living through an historic moment in time that has forced us, all of us, to pause and wait -wait for this to pass, wait for the virus to slow down, wait for the world to begin healing.  But this waiting isn’t easy, is it?  It not easy when you’ve chosen a color palette that perfectly fits the inspo board you’ve meticulously put together, when you have a gorgeous wedding dress ready to be worn, when your  floral arrangements are designed and your invitations have gone out (or are about to go out). Everything you’ve spent months dreaming of is now suddenly on hold.  This is so hard, I know, but it will be okay.

I want to assure you of a few things.  First and foremost, in a time when everyone is feeling isolated, and separated, you are not alone in this.  The wedding industry is a big, creative, and supportive community that is in the business of helping a dream come together.  We know there are so many moving parts to planning a wedding, with a network of vendors, and timelines – negotiating the logistics of contingency plans can seem overwhelming.  But one thing we excel at is making it work.  If you are one of our 2020 brides or grooms, you’ve already heard from us and know we are very actively watching the current climate of this COVID 19 crisis and how it may possibly affect your wedding.  We’ve also kept in touch with many of our preferred vendors to make sure we’re on the same page.  Even if you’re not planning a wedding with us, know that there are so many vendors out there who are bending over backwards to be available to their clients.  Trust the professionals to provide you with the guidance you need in all of this.

The next assurance is something my mother taught me, and her mother taught her, and is a valuable mantra I use all the time: this too, shall pass. As a society, we look for immediate answers and expect timelines with finite start and end dates, so this current situation with all of the unknowns is a new and challenging territory for many.  Add to that the emotional and financial investment of planning a wedding, and you may be feeling like the world is spinning off its axis. It’s not fair, and it’s frustrating, but it will not last forever. In fact, we’re already starting to hear that our social distancing efforts are working and we are successfully “flattening the curve”.  There is an end, and we’ll all be stronger from this journey and more appreciative of each other’s sacrifices along the way.

My final assurance is that I promise we will gather again, and we’ll  celebrate love, and family, and togetherness and it will be all the sweeter after this extended separation. If your wedding is this year, or you’ve had to reschedule to 2021, there is a whole tribe of people – from family, to friends, to vendors who can’t wait for the time when we’re all able to come together to celebrate your love and commitment.  There is a light at the end of this, friend. Keep hanging on. We’ll get through this together.

Sending social distance hugs and love,

Jessica

Director of Events

For those of you who have been forced to move your date because of COVID-19, I have some reassuring facts for you:

● 96% of couples say they are not canceling their weddings
● Among those postponing their weddings, 65% are moving their
receptions to a later date in 2020.
● The rest of respondents who are postponing said that they are shifting to
2021 (18%) or are still deciding (17%).
● Roughly 40% of those postponing their weddings are planning to get
legally married prior to their rescheduled receptions.

Stephanie and Jimmy – An Elegant Summer Wedding

As we spring into the new wedding season, we love reflecting on past weddings and one that stands out is Stephanie and Jimmy’s wedding at the Wadsworth Mansion last June! Their wedding included gorgeous outdoor lighting, a classic car, an outdoor ceremony, a stunning head table, and tons of fun during the reception. Both Stephanie and Jimmy were so excited during their wedding, and their enthusiasm and love for one another made this day something to remember.

One of my favorite parts of their wedding were their introductions. Their bridesmaids and groomsmen each incorporated props and turned the procession into a show for the guests! They were such a great group to work with, and I absolutely loved their sense of fun and being there during their special day.

Now, you can see Stephanie and Jimmy’s wedding for yourself! Shutter and Sound Films put out an absolutely gorgeous film of their wedding day. I love how you can see the flow of their wedding, while also seeing some of the beautiful locations around the mansion!

Tips for Keeping Organized While Planning Your Wedding!

You’ve recently gotten engaged and you know you want a wedding to remember. You have some idea of the décor that you want, have looked into which venues would be best, and want to keep everything organized. Unfortunately, the organization is harder than you expected and you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed.

I know I felt like I had gotten in over my head when I was planning my own wedding two years ago. I felt like I wasn’t prepared as I scrolled through Pinterest and wedding websites. As the date drew closer, I felt more nervous—not about marrying the person I loved, but instead about planning my own wedding.

Photographer: Derek Halkett

During this time, I got the best piece of advice I could have gotten from one of my best friends: Don’t panic. You just need to take things one step at a time. With that piece of advice and a few more, I had an amazing wedding that my friends and family still talk about to this day.

Now with a bit more experience under my belt and having learned from my own wedding, here are a few tips for keeping your cool when planning your wedding.

Book Your Venue First

One of the most important things to do is to book your venue first. Not only will this determine how many guests you can have at your wedding, but will also determine what sort of decorations you can have, and which caterers are available to you. Each venue is different, and each has its own policies. Not only that, but booking your venue means that you’ll have a solid date to work from for invitations and other plans. Keep in mind that if you plan to book at the gorgeous Wadsworth Mansion, keep the season in mind! We have different flowers and foliage depending on the season, and each gives a different feel for your wedding.

Avoid Getting Bogged Down in Details

While you may have what you think is the perfect time line for your big day, or an idea of what your centerpieces need to look like, remember to not get bogged down in the details. Fine details can help enhance your wedding, but don’t stress too much over them. At the end of the day, the big picture is what matters. I remember being worried about the color of the napkins at my own wedding. In the end, no one notices the napkins. Instead, they remember and enjoy the overall experience of the day. At the Wadsworth Mansion in particular, you’ll have a stunning backdrop for your wedding no matter what. Even if you can’t find the exact centerpieces you want, it’s okay; you’ll still have a beautiful wedding.

Make a Plan…And Stick To It

At the beginning of the planning process, you’ll want to make a list of things that you need to take care of and deadlines for each of these items. This may include things like booking a venue, finding a florist and deciding on your floral arrangements, picking a caterer and deciding the menu, and more. While making your plan, keep in mind that the people you hire and book are there to help give you advice and guide you through the process. If you wind up booking at the Wadsworth, we’ll give you planning tools and resources to work with to help with the process!

Communication is Key!

Remember to communicate throughout the planning process, especially with your caterer and venue. While your vendors have likely planned many weddings in the past, it’s important to communicate what you want for your own wedding. Not only will this allow your vendors to let you know what is and isn’t possible, but will make the week up to your wedding and your wedding day run a lot more smoothly! Make sure to also remember to communicate with your bridal party and family about date, timing, and schedule; that way, they’ll know where to be and when!

Most Importantly, Relax

There is no event or wedding out there that runs perfect. There will always be snags or hang ups that you don’t expect. But don’t worry! At the end of the day, you’re going to have a beautiful wedding with friends and family while confirming your vows with someone you love. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, take a step back and take a few, deep breaths; you’re going to have a great wedding.

Bridesmaid Proposal Ideas

Allison poses with her bridesmaids in front of the mansion.

You’ve just gotten engaged and know exactly who you’re going to ask to be your bridesmaids. The problem is, you’re not exactly sure how to ask. While there is no wrong way to ask someone to be your bridesmaid, we’ve taken the opportunity to give you some of our favorite ways of asking!

Drinks with Friends

This one takes a bit of preparation. First, you’ll need to order a few customized glasses that say “Will You Be My Bridesmaid?” on the side, or get crafty and make them yourself! Then, invite your bridesmaids for a fun night out at your favorite local bar or for an enjoyable evening at your home. Once they’ve gotten there, pour a round of drinks in the customized glasses before serving them. It’s a great way to have a fun night, while also giving your bridesmaids a keepsake to take home with them.

Movie Night

Grab a copy of “Bridesmaids” and invite your own potential bridesmaids to come to a movie night! Pop some popcorn, grab some snacks, and enjoy. Once you’ve watched the movie, ask them to be your own bridesmaids. Alternatively, you can send them each a copy of the movie to enjoy with the simple question of “Will you be my bridesmaid?”

Delectable Delight

You can always send your bridesmaids a sweet treat along with a sweet message! Ask your bridesmaids by sending chocolates, macarons, or other delectable sweets to their homes with your burning question. They’re sure to love the food, and will likely love being your bridesmaids, too!

Adventure and Fun

Take a trip with your bridesmaids to a fun location! You’ll want to set up a spot beforehand where you put a piece of paper or small sign that asks the question, “Will you be my bridesmaids?” Once both you and they get to the spot, you’ll likely get some great reactions from each of them!

Simple and Sweet

If you and your bridesmaids live far away from one another, a great way to propose is with a simple card that expresses your personality. Whether you decide on a card that’s fun, sweet, lighthearted, or funny, your bridesmaids are sure to enjoy receiving it in the mail.

No matter how you ask your bridesmaids, they’re sure to appreciate that you asked them to be part of your very special day!

Meet our 2015 Mrs. Wadsworth {All three of them!}

2015 wedding show flyerFB

Every year at our Wedding Show (March 1, 2015 from 11am to 3pm), we invite a select few of our 2014 brides who really impressed us with the way they brought their wedding vision to life.  This year, we once again have three lovely brides who created beautiful, unique celebrations that transformed the mansion into a reflection of their taste and style.  The honorary title of Mrs. Wadsworth, Expert Bride, is given to these three ladies who will be on hand throughout the day of the wedding show to offer their personal experience and expertise in planning a mansion wedding.  What sets us apart from many other venues is the ability to truly create a one-of-a-kind event from the decor, to the food, to the layout of the day.  These three women really took that concept and ran with it to create some of the most memorable Wadsworth Mansion weddings of the 2014 season.  Stop by our table to chat with one of them, and the Mansion staff (Deborah, Jessica, and Rebecca) to learn more about a wedding here.  Then wander around to meet our preferred and recommended vendors and discover all the possibilities of a Wadsworth Mansion wedding.

Now, in no particular order, we’d like you all to meet our three 2015 Mrs. Wadsworth!

Lisa Awugah

Lisa married Kevin on 8/23/14 and their wedding was nothing short of gorgeous.  Every aspect of the day from the table numbers to the wedding cake topper was carefully thought out and executed. We blogged about her spectacular celebration here and then their wedding was featured on Reverie Gallery with some lovely words from the bride herself.

Lisa Maino

Lisa and Gregory were married on 10/12/14, just when the leaves began to hint at colors of autumn.  She had her ceremony on the vista, cocktails on the terrace, and brought her guests into the Loggia for dancing and merriment.  Her personal touches of a guitar for guests to sign in place of a guest book, her fantastic kids table to keep the little ones entertained, and gold painted mini pumpkins as place cards were some of the creative touches she used to personalize her day.

Sarah Gadbois

Sarah and Joshua were married on 8/15/14 in our tennis pavilion.  She was 100% a princess bride. She saw the mansion, imagined a full blown princess inspired theme wedding, and boy did she deliver.  Complete with a pumpkin shaped horse drawn carriage to carry her to her ceremony!  Sarahs wedding was previously blogged by us here, check it out to see all of her amazing details.

Featured Wedding: Larissa and Martin 8/30/14

Larissa and Martin were destined to have an awesome wedding.  When you take into account that the weather that day was perfect, that Larissa thought out every minute detail, and the couple brought the most fun group of people to celebrate – things fell into place flawlessly.  Lets start with the details.  The gray, coral, and gold accents complimented this late summer wedding with that perfect pop of color to our lush green surroundings. A delicious tower of cupcakes and initialed heart shaped cookies at every place setting were unforgettable sweet treats for the guests and the little touches Larissa put here and there all over the mansion, that turned a grand historic mansion into her big historic home for the day.  Take a look at the love, laughter, and fun captured by J. Fiereck Photography.  Congratulations to Larissa and Martin!  We were so happy to host your wedding at the mansion and wish you a lifetime of happiness!

Featured Wedding – Jenn and Bryce 7/19/14

On this dreary day, we thought it’d be nice to inject a little sunlight into your afternoon by revisiting a beautiful Spring wedding this past year.  Jenn and Bryce were highschool sweethearts and were so excited to start their lives together.  It was a beautiful day in July when Jenn and Bryce’s family gathered to celebrate their “I Do’s”.  Jen got ready at her mothers house and arrived at the mansion for their ceremony on the vista.  We loved that they included their dog into the photos (we here at the mansion are big dog fans) and even appointed a “dog sitter” who took care of its transportation and care during the wedding.  Jenns color palette of coral and gray beautifully complemented the lush greens of the mansion in July.  We are glad the day was beautifully captured by Perceptions Photography for you all to see!  Enjoy a little peek into a day of laughter, joy, family and friends, and happily ever after!

Featured Wedding: Anna and Jimmy 9/13/14

September is one of our favorite months for weddings at the mansion.  The Hydrangeas begin to blush from the changing of the season and the weather is almost always perfect.  Anna and Jimmy had a beautiful celebration where they were able to take advantage of our beautiful surroundings before the rain arrived and then (as we all know how New England weather can be) when the rain stopped, went back out for more photos!

Before heading off to their ceremony at the beautiful St. Sebastian Church that is located right down the road from us, they had their first look out in our Tennis Pavilion.  They wandered around the property to pose in our stunning treelines and down to the bridge by our vernal pool.  We love how they incorporated our natural surroundings into their photos as both are avid hikers and nature enthusiasts.

The day was beautifully captured by Uplift Photography and we are happy to share these photos with all of you!

Congratulations to the happy couple!  Thank you for hosting your wedding at the Wadsworth Mansion!

Featured Wedding – Sarah and Joshua 8/15/14

When Sarah arrived at the mansion for her tour, she told us she was looking for the perfect venue for a Disney princess Cinderella wedding.  The moment she walked through the door, her eyes lit up and she knew this was the place for her.  From then on, Sarah was known to us as our “princess bride” and boy, did she deliver!  Sarah and Josh were such a wonderful couple to work with.  They were so in love and just so happy to be getting married that all of the details and planning were just icing on the cake.  Congratulations to Sarah and Josh on the beginning of your happily every after!
